Cold Weather & Hearing Health: What to Know Before Winter Arrives

Healthy hearing in the Adirondaks.

When you live in the Adirondack region, you know that fall doesn’t last long. The transition to winter is fast and often intense—and while you might be prepping your snow tires or switching to flannel sheets, don’t forget about your hearing health.

Here are five ways colder weather can affect your ears and hearing aids, and what you can do about it:

1. Cold Weather Drains Hearing Aid Batteries Faster

Hearing aid batteries, especially zinc-air types, tend to lose power more quickly in colder temperatures. That’s because cold air reduces battery voltage and shortens lifespan.

What to do:

  • Keep extra batteries on hand or switch to rechargeable models.

  • Store your hearing aids in a warm, dry place overnight.

2. Moisture Can Damage Hearing Aids

Snow, rain, and indoor condensation can create moisture buildup in your devices, especially if you go from outdoors to indoors frequently.

What to do:

  • Use a hearing aid dehumidifier or drying box overnight.

  • Wipe your devices with a soft, dry cloth after being outside.

3. Cold Air Increases Risk of Ear Infections

Exposure to cold wind and fluctuating temperatures can lead to increased ear canal sensitivity, congestion, and even infections.

What to do:

  • Wear earmuffs, hats, or headbands to protect your ears.

  • See a specialist if you notice pain, itching, or drainage.

4. Hats & Scarves Can Interfere with Hearing Aid Fit

While bundling up is a must, heavy hats and scarves can knock hearing aids out of place or block sound delivery.

What to do:

  • Choose hearing-aid-friendly hats (looser knit or adjustable bands).

  • Ask us for custom retention solutions or slim-tube adjustments.

5. Appointments Can Be Harder to Schedule in Winter

Snowstorms, illnesses, and holiday closings can make it harder to get timely hearing care when you need it.

What to do:

  • Schedule your cleanings or checks now.
